The first tomato!

Finally!! I went outside to water my plants and found this little guy growing on one of my tomato plants. I was so excited. I had seen several blossoms, but no tomatoes up to this point. I have to say I was a little worried. Last year I had a huge tomato plant that blossomed like crazy and never produced a single tomato. I was hoping this year would not be a repeat of that, and now, I can be assured that it won't.

  1. Just keep your eyes peeled for tomato worms. They'll destroy your tomato plants. We always have a ton of them. If you stay on top of it they don't do too much damage.

    1. Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping that since my tomatoes are in containers it won't be too much of a problem...

  2. Tomato worms are more like caterpillars. A moth comes in and lays the eggs. I don't know what the moth looks like, but the caterpillars are big and green with strips and they have a red "horn" on their rear end. They eat the leaves and occasionally they'll eat green tomatoes. They are hard to spot because they blend in really well. The best way to spot them is to look on the ground for their droppings. When I find one I snip off the whole leaf with the caterpillar and throw it away. Hopefully you won't have a problem. You can google the tomato hornworm for more information.

    1. What do the droppings look like? Little black balls? I think I will google it. I've never seen them before. Could that be why my big tomato plant never produced?

    2. You probably didn't have tomato worms last year(believe me, you would have noticed eventually). The droppings are little greenish black balls that get larger as the caterpillar gets larger. If I find them I look on the leaves above the droppings and I usually find it. Maybe you didn't have enough pollinators(bees and such), but I don't know. I'm glad you'll have a least one tomato this year. Good luck.
